California regulates most electronics waste as “Universal Waste”. Universal Wastes are common hazardous wastes that pose a lower risk to people and the environment than other hazardous waste. As long as these materials are recycled in accordance with the Universal Waste regulations, they do not need to be treated as a hazardous waste.
Electronics are considered hazardous due to the lead in CRT glass, metals on circuit boards, batteries, mercury components and PCB’s found in some electronics.
Facilities which recycle Universal Wastes are subject to regulation by the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), and must meet stringent regulatory standards.
Onsite Electronics Recycling conducts collection and recycling of electronics in full compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. We have an extensive knowledge of the State electronics regulations as well as hazardous waste regulations and put a focus on compliance. We have passed all DTSC inspections with no violations, attesting to our knowledge and focus on compliance. Copies of these inspections are available for review upon request.
Onsite Electronics Recycling puts the utmost priority on the safety of our personnel and clients we serve. In addition to maintaining and enforcing safety policies for all operations, we encourage all employees to actively correct and report any safety hazards they may see. We additionally hold monthly safety meetings with all staff, in which safety procedures are reviewed.
The Onsite Corporate Policy
Onsite maintains an Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) Management System in order to continually improve our environmental, health and safety program and reduce environmental impacts and hazards associated with our operations, activities, products, and services.
Within the framework of our EH&S Management System we commit to:
- Enhancing and improving our EH&S Management System to ensure that it is appropriate and effective for helping us to achieve our environmental, health and safety objectives and targets
- Continually improve the environmental, health and safety performance and prevent pollution, injury, and ill health in our own operations and those of our downstream vendors
- Comply with applicable environmental, health and safety laws, regulations, codes of practice, and other requirements at a minimum
- Maintain accountability for all Hazardous e-Waste throughout the Recycling Chain to final disposition
- Prohibit exports of Hazardous Electronic Waste throughout the recycling chain which violate the Basel Convention on the Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal
- Ensuring that our operations and those of our downstream vendors are socially responsible and provide for fair treatment of employees and prevent the use of child and prison labor
- Making customers aware of the security issues and addressing data security and privacy requirements throughout our recycling chain
We will communicate our policy to employees through our training and internal communication programs. The policy will be made available to the external interested parties via our website and corporate documentation.
